Illustration Friday: LAYERS

The first thing that came to mind for "Layers" was a cake with many layers. Then I remembered I had an image on hand for this. I made this last year for the invitation to my father's 70th birthday party. The mouse in the red jogging suit is a character in stories my father used to make up for us. Celebrations with my family always involve many cakes so it wouldn't do to show just one. And yes, there are 70 candles!

Illustration Friday: SWEATER

 

After staring at the computer too much doing design work and my Valentine Kitties illustration, I decided to just color my sketch in with colored pencils. This little girl is my favorite. Below she's shown with the rest of her friends, all modeling sweaters that don't really exist outside of my imagination. If I had tons of time and yarn, I probably could knit these things. I don't think any cat would really be into wearing any sweater but it's fun to imagine it.

I had originally wanted to post this for last week's Illustration Friday theme of reverse but a bunch of things came up and I never got around to finishing it until now. Just in time for Valentine's Day!

Illustration Friday: SURRENDER

Initially, I didn't know what I was going to do so I just starting drawing a face in my sketchbook and this is what I came up with. I don't know who this young woman is surrendering to or why. She seems non-chalant about it so I think she may still have another pistol or a dirk hidden in her boot.

Illustration Friday: DUSTY

Too much fairy dust made everything dusty.

I  was really out of my comfort zone working on this illustration. The imagery was right up my alley, but it was rendering the image in Illustrator that challenged me. I had gotten so attached over the years to making images like this using pen and ink and watercolor that it became not just an exercise in digital illustration but an exercise in letting go. Whew!

 

Illustration Friday: CHICKEN

Here it is, my first Illustration Friday post ever and my first digital illustration that wasn't created for a licensed children's book. I've been really resistant to putting together a portfolio of digital illustration but resistance was futile. Illustration Friday provides the concept to illustrate and my challenge is to illustrate that concept and post it here.
